Jake Maarse spoke at the club about his project – 2015 Skate for Polio Eradication. His goal is to raise awareness and fund for the eradication of Polio. He plan to skate 250 KM at the following locations: Rideau Canal – Ottawa, Lake Memphremagog – Vermont, Lakw Placid – New York and Big Rideau Lake – Portland.
Maarse was born in Aalsmeer, Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in 1977. He worked in the green industry until 1987. At that time he and his wife started their own landscaping company. Maarse has been a Rotarian since 1990, first in Cobourg and presently with the Ottawa West Rotary Club.
Maarse got his love for skating in the winter of 62/63 when Holland had great outdoor ice everywhere. He joined a skating club when he was 17 and skated Olympic style and Marathon distances.
During his talk, he discussed the history of skate and the current status of skating in Canada. He brought some samples of skates including a blade that is used in Ice Yacht Racing.
He was introduced by Past President Dave Pyett and thanked by Past President Miriam Fraser.
